2023 Kia Sportage

Battle of the Compact Crossovers

If you've read our 2023 Kia Sportage Review, you'd know that the Kia Sportage is a highly affordable and practical compact SUV with a plethora of technology and features. The Toyota RAV4 however, is also a compact SUV with a similar price point. For those in the compact crossover market, we'll break down both vehicles, so that you can decide which SUV better serves your needs.

Fuel Economy

Both the 2023 Kia Sportage and the 2023 Toyota Rav4 come in three configurations; gas-powered, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid. Mileage for the gas-powered Kia Sportage delivers a combined fuel economy rating of 32 mpg, while the Toyota offers 30 mpg. For Hybrid and Plug-In configurations, the Kia Sportage produces 43 mpg and 84 MPGe respectively, while the RAV4 gets 40 mpg and 94 MPGe. It's clear that the fuel-powered and Hybrid Kia Sportage has better fuel economy, while the Plug-In RAV4 has slightly more range.

Interior and Technology

Regarding interior and cargo space, the 2023 Kia Sportage boasts 108 cubic feet of passenger space and 74.1 cubic feet of cargo space, amongst the biggest in its class. The Toyota Rav4 however, falls behind with its tighter passenger space of 98.9 cubic feet and cargo space of 69.8 cubic feet. The large interior of the 2023 Kia Sportage is also brimming with Hyundai's latest driver-assist and creature-comfort technologies such as:
  • Kia DriveWise Suite
    • Auto Emergency Braking
    • Blind-Spot Collision Avoidance Assist & Warning
    • Blind-Spot View Monitor
    • Smart Cruise Control w/ Stop & Go
    • Rear Parking Distance Warning
    • High Beam Assist
    • and much, much more.
  • 12.2-inch Digital Cluster
  • Android Auto + Apple CarPlay
  • LED Highlights
The 2023 Toyota Rav4 comes equipped with Toyota Sense 2.5, containing various assist features such as lane-tracing assistance, road sign recognition, and lane-departure alerts. However, the 2023 Kia Sportage simply offers more safety and driver assistance, in a more budget-friendly package.

Warranty Coverage

Both cars are known for their reliability, but how do the warranties compare? Every 2023 Kia Sportage comes with Kia's legendary 5yr/60,000 mile basic and 10yr/100,000 mile powertrain warranty. On top of that, we include Kia's Million Mile Warranty:  Almost every component of your powertrain will be covered – right down to the seals. It’s good for 1,000,000 miles and an unlimited number of years . Extensive and generous, you really cant beat Kia's warranty. The Toyota Rav4 offers a less enticing warranty: 3yr/36,000 mile basic and 5 yr/60,000 mile powertrain warranty.   At the end of the day, it's clear that the 2023 Sportage is the more affordable, practical, and roomier vehicle, with better technology and warranties. Although the Plug-In Hybrid Rav4 has a slightly better fuel economy, the difference is negligible at best.
